His latest publication, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shantiarts.co\/uploads\/files\/ghi\/GLASER_CANYON.html\"><i>Unnamed Canyon<\/i><\/a> (Shanti Arts, 2024), <em> meditates <\/em>on teachers and teachings, his educational paths, and significant themes of his personal life in the nineteen-nineties.<\/p>\n<p>The <i>Voice of Wilkinson<\/i> sat down with Dr. Glaser to talk about <i>Unnamed Canyon<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><b>The Voice of Wilkinson: Congratulations on your sixth publication. Tell us about the title, <\/b><b><i>Unnamed Canyon<\/i><\/b><b>, and how it came to be.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Brian Glaser<\/b>: The title comes from one of the poems in the book, \u201cDocumentary.\u201d It\u2019s about a team of naturalists in Orange County. A friend asked me what the unnamed canyon is. In the context of the poem \u201cDocumentary,\u201d it\u2019s poetry. But thinking of the whole book as an unnamed canyon, I wouldn\u2019t want to give that canyon another name.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>\u201cI write poems because that\u2019s my nature\u201d &#8211; Dr. Brian Glaser\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16053 size-medium alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2025\/03\/unnamed-canyon-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2025\/03\/unnamed-canyon-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2025\/03\/unnamed-canyon.jpg 296w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>VoW: The poetry in this book is described as \u2018meditation on teaching and teachers.\u2019 Can you explain that?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>BG<\/b>: For years I have encountered a quote from Albert Schweitzer in a building where I teach: \u201cI always think that we live, spiritually, by what others have given us in the significant hours of our life.\u201d We don\u2019t always know when those moments of significance are happening. Now that I\u2019m over fifty, looking back on most of my life\u2014so many times, those moments were created by my teachers.<\/p>\n<p><b>VoW: I love how you go into your personal experiences from the nineties. Tell me about going back to those memories and wanting to share them with the reader.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>BG<\/b>: The nineties were a great decade to be in school. So much germinal thinking about globalization was taking shape, and the breakthroughs in social justice of the preceding decades had opened up deep, challenging conversations about poetry. In my own work at the time, I approached those conversations from an oblique angle, as is my nature. But it was a vital decade for the humanities, and I am still carried forward by that energy.<\/p>\n<p><b>VoW: Tell me about one of the more memorable nineties moments you reflected.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>BG<\/b>: Being chased by a column of stray dogs as I was jogging through my new neighborhood as a visiting professor in Ciudad del Carmen, Mexico.<\/p>\n<p><b>VoW: What is one of your favorite poems in <\/b><b><i>Unnamed Canyon<\/i><\/b><b>? Can you give me a snippet?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0BG: <\/b>This one is quite short.
