Far in the future, humanity has lost its ability to cultivate the Earth. Dust storms sweep across the land and fallow ground has become barren. Our only chance for survival is to think in a new way, or rather in a new direction. By casting off the shackles of soil as a supplier of sustenance, we begin looking and growing upwards, towards the heavens, towards the future.

Luckily this overdramatic and elegiac vision of our future is merely post-apocalyptic fiction, but the innovation of new techniques for growing food is being felt right now on Chapman campus. On the third floor patio of Argyros Forum there are three Tower Gardens. Each tower uses a vertical aeroponic (growing plants without the use of soil) system to control and encourage growth of vegetables, fruits, and flowers.

Tower gardens have grown in popularity over the last few years due to their success at bringing easy and effective gardening to any area, specifically areas that don’t have the room or resources for traditional gardening, like the urban jungle. Tower Gardens are nearly self-sufficient, running on a water timer and regulated with tonics to maintain an optimal pH level. Due to this regulation of factors, Tower Gardens help plants reach their full potential quickly and relieve many of the stresses and the unpredictability found in traditional gardening.

The
Tower Gardens
are open and free to all students, staff, and faculty. If you are interested in being involved with this progressive, environmentally friendly system you can
