The club competes in IHSA hunter seat equitation competitions for Chapman University. The riders of Chapman Equestrian are undergraduate students experienced with showing horses in a variety of riding disciplines including equitation, hunters, jumpers, eventing, and dressage.
These riders pool their talents together to compete in IHSA sanctioned shows, holding their own with other big name schools in the Southern California region. Chapman is part of the IHSA Zone 8 Region 2. Other colleges in this region include USC, UCLA, Cal Poly Pomona, UCSD, The Claremont Colleges, and Arizona State University among many others. Competitors are judged on their equitation (their position and ability to effectively ride) aboard a horse either over fences or on the flat. This classic style of riding is akin to fox hunting traditions in both Europe and North America. The catch to the collegiate format of competition is the rider draws a horse “out of a hat” at the beginning of the show day, and is then tasked to show the horse to the best of their skill and ability. Riders show horses in divisional classes based on previous horse show experience. Points are awarded for placings from first to sixth, with a first place blue ribbon earning a team seven points.

The Chapman riders have competed in six shows so far this season, with the remainder of the show season taking place starting in the Spring semester. The first show of the season was hosted by Cal Poly Pomona University on October 31, 2015. The riders of Chapman Equestrian earned the team high point championship that day, starting out the season big. Highlights from this first show include Alexa Sikes (’17) winning the Open Flat class, and Leah La Masney (’17) winning the Intermediate Over Fences class.
Highlights from the other shows this year include Zume Galleher (’18) winning both the Intermediate Flat classes at the December 5th and 6th shows hosted by Claremont/Chapman/CSUF at Pepperglen Farms in Norco, CA. In addition, Captain Ari Dicker (’17) won the Open Fences class at the December 5th show. The Chapman riders continuously place well in their classes, earning ribbons in every division. The team hopes to continue their winning streak into the second half of the show season. The next show weekend will take place at Crossroads Farms in Gilbert, AZ on February 6th and 7th, 2016.
