In today’s digital world, your online presence matters more than ever. It’s the fastest way for employers to learn who you are and what you have to offer. That’s why Toshiba’s Director of Solutions & Services and Personal Branding Expert, Maegan Lujan, delivered an important message to our Executive MBA students on the significance of their “digital footprint” in the modern business landscape.

In the world of business leadership, personal branding has recently become a key predictor of success in corporate mobility. We are now in an age where employers will most likely search your LinkedIn and other social media handles before even looking at your resume. That is why Dr. Tess Breen, Clinical Assistant Professor of Management in the Argyros School of Business and Economics, invited a personal branding expert to campus to share some key strategies for maintaining an active and engaging digital presence, including the types of content to share, frequency of posts, and platforms to leverage.

Lujan explained, “Your online presence is your digital calling card. It is your first impression both personally and professionally,” she continued, “that’s why, it is crucial to curate an online presence that authentically reflects who you are and what you stand for.”

Lujan took students through her personal journey as a runaway foster kid without a high school education, to finding her passion and leveraging personal branding to take ownership of the way her story was portrayed online. This was an empowering move for Lujan to escape imposter syndrome and take control of her story.

She explained, “Understanding the psychological triggers that influence perception online can help you tailor your content and messaging effectively. This can include strategy around your colors, font, logos, and imagery.”

Lujan also encouraged students to “show up consistently” online. Building a relationship with your target audience requires consistency in your messaging. Personal branding is not just about marketing yourself; it’s about authentically representing who you are and what you bring to the table.
