Chapman University Singers: The Lone Star Tour 2014
December 17, 2013
Following their
successful performance of Benjamin Britten’s monumental War Requiem
at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Chapman’s University Singers took their talents to the Lone Star State in January. The highly recognized choir gave 10 performances in and around Houston, Fort Worth, and Dallas, beginning January 19 and concluding January 26. All performances were free and open to the public. The University Singers will perform this repertoire in their Post-Tour Concert February 7 in the Fish Interfaith Center. Tickets may be purchased at

The University Singers, under the direction of Dr. Stephen Coker, boast a wide choral repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to more modern compositions. Their tour selections include the vocal works of Brahms, Britten, Whitacre, Victoria, Woo, and others. This highly select 34-voice mixed choir will also perform international folk songs and opera selections from the Bel Canto era.

An Illustrious Tradition
Founded in 1963 by William D. Hall, Ph.D., the Chapman University Singers have sung throughout the U.S. and Europe, and performed in private audience for Pope John Paul II. An all-undergraduate ensemble, the University Singers include vocal performance and music education majors from Chapman University’s heralded
Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music
. The Singers are led by Stephen Coker, Ph.D., who served previously on the choral faculties of Portland State University, the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and Oklahoma City University. In addition to his academic work, Dr. Coker has conducted choirs, workshops and festivals in South Korea, Taiwan, Portugal, Israel and Sweden.
The University Singers represent the Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music within the
College of Performing Arts
at Chapman University. The college also includes the departments of Dance and Theatre. Students enjoy exceptional training and academic opportunities that emphasize artistic collaboration, innovative curricula, and community outreach programs. This three-fold approach to arts education not only trains great performers—it also develops a generation of artists with the capacity to create means of expression yet to be imagined.
A Bright Future
In spring 2015, the college will host the grand opening of the
Marybelle and Sebastian P. Musco Center for the Arts
. This world-class 1,100-seat facility represents Chapman University’s commitment to the arts, and is destined to become an extraordinary venue for live performances in Southern California.
