Blonde woman with hair pulled back tightly, wearing a black button-up blouse in front of a grey marbled background.Music composition faculty member Vera Ivanova premieres her first new-music opera, The Double (libretto by Sarah LaBrie), on June 4 & 5 at Boston Court Pasadena as part of Synchromy‘s first new-music opera festival. Based on the Dostoevsky novel, the new comic opera is about a troubled hero who believes that he has a double who is acting independently in an attempt to take over his life. In this case, the imposter is his own digital profile. The librettist, Sarah LaBrie, sees the relevancy of the new work in comparison to many who “are coming to terms with what it means to be a citizen of a country founded on a dream that clashes glaringly with the reality many of us confront.” Brightwork newmusic ensemble, which includes Director of Percussion Studies Nicholas Terry, will perform the score.
