Just a quick note to thank everyone for coming out to our events this week!

We had a smash success with our pre-screening of Cedar Rapids, the hilarious (and, surprisingly touching) comedy starring The Office’s Ed Helms.  While we had let you know about the event just days before it played, we weren’t expecting the Folino to be almost completely packed!  With such short notice, we weren’t sure students would be able to pack the screening into their already busy schedules – but given the long line formed already by 7PM, we knew seats were going to be limited.  One surprise caught everyone off-guard, from administrators to students, and that was the screening company’s insistence to collect all cell phones from attendees before entering the theater.  We had a similar experience with our screening of True Grit, but in that case we had enough advance notice to make students aware of the security change from our normal screenings.  Arriving just before the event to discover the security was going to be collecting cell phones, we anticipated an uproar from the students – but, as normal, our ever-professional students took the additional screening procedure in stride, some even joking that the additional security made the event all the more exciting.  Thanks everyone for your patience!

And, yesterday’s screening of “The Complete Metropolis” was an equally unparalleled event, with a fantastic, newly restored edition of Fritz Lang’s masterpiece screened in the Folino for the first time.  One of our newest full-time faculty members, Emily Cartman, of the Film Studies Program, was responsible for bringing the film – as well the the prestigious UCLA Film and Television Archive’s director, Chris Horan, to introduce the artistic and cultural significance of the film.  While the theater was not stuffed quite to the brim, the lively conversation and Q&A following the event led more than a few students to take to Twitter to share their excitement.

And, don’t forget, tonight we have another exciting event for students interested in pursuing a career in computer or video gaming;  come learn the skills and tools you need to succeed at the Game Developer’s Conference, one of the most well-attended non-fanboy gaming industry events.  The lecture / event takes place tonight, at 6:30, in the Folino Theater.
