This year, as you already know, we're hosting the Sikh Art and Film Festival this weekend.  They're already setting up, and the volunteer team is very excited, talking up students and faculty about the exciting weekend-long event.

Through our close partnership with SikhLens, the organization which sponsors and organizes the entire festival, we're proud to announce the creation of a new scholarship program, the SAFF-Bhathal Scholarship of 2011, created exclusively for the Dodge College community.  Our students (no matter your discipline) are encouraged to collaborate with others in the school who share your interests, in producing short (5-15 minute) films focusing on some aspect of Sikh culture that fascinates you, be it Sikh-specific subject matter, a broad topic or concern within the community, or a pervasive theme you can apply to the larger global stage.  Two films will be selected from the entry pool, and the filmmakers awarded $5000 apiece to fund their projects.

Additionally, the films will receive special billing, and premiere on the big screen at the next Sikh Film Fest in 2011!

This is a very exciting opportunity, for the Festival, for Dodge College, and – most importantly – for our students.  The SAFF is an internationally recognized organization devoted to celebrating all things Sikh; as such, the recognition you'll receive for a successful entry will echo throughout the niche industry, not to mention the obvious benefits of expanding your reputation internationally.  Take the time this weekend to attend as much of the Festival as you can, familiarize yourself with Sikh culture, meet these incredibly friendly guests, discover as many stories as you can, and begin brainstorming ideas if this program speaks to your interests.  We'll have information about scholarship deadlines coming soon.

Here are the first set of official instructions, provided also by email to students.

ELIGIBILITY:  Any student enrolled full-time at Dodge College is eligible to apply.

PARAMETERS: Each production must be filmed in California, and must address Sikh themes, concerns, or subject matter.

GUIDELINES:
a)  An authentic vision of the Sikh community will be paramount to the judges.  To become better acquainted with this community and its issues and unique traits, we highly recommend that you attend SAFF 2010, to be held at Dodge Nov 19-21, 2010.  All Chapman students can obtain complementary tickets to the Saturday and Sunday films, please present your valid Chapman ID at the will call desk before the shows.   Attendance is not mandatory, but it will provide applicants with the opportunity to get to know members of the Sikh community face-to-face, as well as to watch this year's films, of course.  The films will be available to view at later dates for those of you who may be shooting that weekend, or cannot attend due to exams.

b) A script or treatment that recognizes the limits of time, logistics, and finances of a student production, will increase its chances of being selected.

c)  The script or treatment can be for either a fiction (narrative/dramatic), or non-fiction (documentary), film.  "Experimental" film treatments will also be considered.

EDITORIAL ADVICE:  SAFF places no restrictions on content, other than that it avoid obscenity and denigration regarding gender, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and race.  Regarding help in editing the film, students may avail themselves of the expertise of SAFF's panel of filmmakers if they wish to, as well as Chapman's own faculty, but these are optional sources of assistance.

DISTRIBUTION:  The films will be property of SAFF, which will have sole authority to distribute, exhibit, and upload them, and to submit them for other festival competitions.  However, all students involved in the project will be allowed to include the finished product as part of their portfolio and submit the project to film festivals as long as SAFF is notified in advance.  Permission to upload the complete film onto various websites will be considered on a case by case basis, and filmmakers will need uploading approval in writing from SAFF.

JUDGES:  The competition will be judged by a panel consisting of SAFF filmmakers, and Dodge faculty/staff.  Their decisions will be final.

EXPENDITURES:  Winners will be expected to provide Dodge College with a line-item budget reflecting how they intend to spend the funds.  They will also be expected to list how the funds were actually spent.
