Professors Trudi Qi, Yuxin Wen, and Jonathan Weinberger were chosen as the 2025 Fletcher Jones Foundation Faculty Fellows in Engineering recipients. They join their fellow engineering faculty, Dr. Emad Arasteh, Dr. Mark Harrison, and Dr. Nasim Mohammadi Estakhri, who were previous recipients of this honor.

This three-year faculty fellowship is a testament to the potential impact of their research on the engineering community and allows for the proper recognition of their groundbreaking work. Supporting their research provides funding to support new, high-risk/high-return research directions proposed by pre-tenure faculty, significantly expanding the research activities within Engineering at Chapman University.

Advancing Innovation in Gesture-Based 3D Creation to Predictive Health AI and Infinite-Dimensional Proof Systems

Professor Trudi Qi’s project is “Gesture-to-3D: Human-Interactive Generative AI for 3D Content Creation in Extended Reality.” Gesture-to-3D is an innovative and interactive generative AI system that enables 3D content creation in XR through hand gestures. Potential applications include design and manufacturing, surgical planning, and 3D visualization in education.

Professor Yuxin Wen’s project is “Adaptive Federated Survival Analysis for Personalized Disease Progression Prediction.” The goal is to advance federated time-to-event modeling by developing a scalable survival modeling framework that leverages high-dimensional, heterogeneous data for personalized disease progression prediction while preserving privacy.

Professor Jonathan Weinberger’s project is “GCTT: A Proof Assistant for Infinite-Dimensional Directed Systems.” The research encompasses the development of a system to natively express arguments in the form ∞ of a formal deductive theory and its implementation as a computer proof assistant. Potential applications are in diverse fields, including algebraic geometry, higher-dimensional algebra, quantum field theory, quantum information theory, rewriting & concurrency theory, agent-based modeling, and networking theory.

Chapman Engineering  Research on the Rise

Thanks to the generous support and vision of The Fletcher Jones Foundation for this program. The Foundation continues to be an active partner in the growth of STEM research and education at Chapman.

These projects showcase the incredible work Dr. Qi, Dr. Wen, and Dr. Weinberger are incorporating into their classes and within their research groups. Undergraduate, graduate, and post-doc students have taken advantage of the opportunity to work with these inspiring faculty.

Thanks to the remarkable contributions by these professors, the future of engineering research is limitless.

We look forward to following their research and witnessing its impact on the engineering industry and beyond.
