Wendy Lower, Ph.D.
Author of Hitler’s Furies: German Women in the Nazi Killing Fields
John K. Roth Professor of History, Claremont McKenna College

In her acclaimed book, Hitler’s Furies: German Women in the Nazi Killing Fields, Dr. Wendy Lower challenges the traditional depiction of German women of the Nazi era as wives, mothers, and girlfriends whose role was primarily to hold down the home front, with only a few women choosing a more active role in the Nazi system of oppression.

Dr. Lower’s extensive research in the archives opened after the fall of the Soviet Union tells a different story, one of ambitious young women ready to travel East, who became witnesses to, and sometimes participants in, Nazi plunder and murder.
