ORANGE, Calif. — Chapman University is launching four new 20-passenger shuttle buses, which will ply routes between the main campus, the new Panther Village student housing complex on W. Chapman Avenue near the 5 Freeway, and the Chapman buildings and offices on West Palm Avenue. The shuttle service will be free to all Chapman students, faculty and staff with current ID cards. The buses, emblazoned with the Chapman University logo and the Chapman colors of cardinal and gray, will soon become a familiar sight on the streets of Orange. The shuttles officially launch their routes on Monday, August 26, the first day of fall classes at Chapman University.
“Thanks to these buses and the new Panther Village student complex, which is located two and a half miles west of the main campus, we expect to see a reduction in student traffic and parking issues in Old Towne Orange and near the university,” said Jerry Price, Ph.D., Chapman vice chancellor and dean of students.
Some 100 upper-division students have just moved in to Panther Village, a remodeled hotel-suites complex located on West Chapman Avenue near the I-5. “Students have been very excited about the prospect of living together in an off-campus community exclusively for them,” said Price. “While Panther Village will have lots of amenities, one of the more attractive features is the shuttle to and from campus. Up to this point, students without a car were limited to off-campus housing options within walking distance of campus; with this shuttle system the students now will have a great off-campus housing opportunity at Panther Village.”
The university has contracted with First Transit, a professional transportation company, for specially trained drivers to operate the shuttles.
The Panther Village shuttle will run every 30 minutes from 7:30 a.m. to 11:45 p.m., Monday through Friday. On Saturdays and Sundays, the shuttle will run from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
A second shuttle route will service the main campus and West Palm Avenue properties, with stops at Schmid Gate, Marion Knott Studios, and the Cypress Parking Lot. It will operate on a continuous loop every 10 minutes from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some runs will also circle over to Chapman’s Grand Avenue parking lot across from the First Presbyterian Church at the beginning and end of weekdays, for the staff and faculty members who park there.
