Chapman University’s School of Pharmacy Appoints Two New Department Chairs

ORANGE, Calif. – Chapman University’s School of Pharmacy – currently recruiting its first cohort of students and set to open as Orange County’s first school of pharmacy in fall 2015 – will welcome two new department chairs as of June 1, 2014. Jeff Goad, Pharm.D., MPH, joining Chapman from USC’s School of Pharmacy, will become professor and chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice, and Reza Mehvar, Pharm.D., Ph.D., recruited to Chapman from the Texas Tech School of Pharmacy, will be professor and chair of the Department of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
About Jeff Goad, Pharm.D., MPH
Dr. Goad joins Chapman from the University of Southern California School of Pharmacy, where he most recently was an associate professor and Vice Chair of Continuing Professional Development, Credentialing and Distance Education. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Southern California School of Pharmacy in 1994 and Master’s of Public Health from the USC Keck School of Medicine in 2003. He completed a residency in pediatric pharmacy practice at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and holds the Certificate of Knowledge in Travel Health from the International Society of Travel Medicine.
Dr. Goad is the immediate past president of the California Immunization Coalition, the first pharmacist to lead the group. He is also the immediate past chair and founding member of the Pharmacists Professional Group Section of the International Society of Travel Medicine. Previously, Dr. Goad served as the President of the California Pharmacists Association.
In 2000, Dr. Goad established and currently runs the Student Health Travel Medicine Clinic. He teaches and coordinates courses in public health and travel medicine as well as teaching immunizations, epidemiology, and parasitology. He is currently a national faculty trainer for the American Pharmacists Association Pharmacy Based Immunization Training Program and the APhA Pharmacy-Based Travel Health Services Advanced Certificate Training. He has directed the USC Community Pharmacy Practice Residency program for the last 15 years, and has implemented numerous community-based patient care programs, including a travel health clinic, tuberculosis compliance clinic, emergency contraceptive service, immunization program, and multiphasic disease state screenings.
About Reza Mehvar, Pharm.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Mehvar received his Pharm.D. degree from the University of Tehran College of Pharmacy (Tehran, Iran) and his Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences (pharmacokinetics) from the University of Alberta Faculty of Pharmacy (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada). In 1988, Dr. Mehvar joined Drake University College of Pharmacy in Des Moines, Iowa as an assistant professor of pharmaceutics. He was promoted to professor of pharmaceutics prior to joining Texas Tech School of Pharmacy in 1999. At Texas Tech, he has served as professor of pharmaceutical sciences, interim co-chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and director of the pharmacokinetics core of the Clinical Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Center.
During his academic career, Dr. Mehvar has taught undergraduate and graduate pharmacokinetics courses and conducted research in the areas of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, hepatobiliary disposition of xenobiotics, and pharmacokinetic-based targeted drug delivery approaches. His laboratory research, which has been published in more than100 peer-reviewed articles, has been consistently supported by several grants from the National Institutes of Health, pharmaceutical industry, and state and local foundations and agencies. Additionally, he has published 18 peer-reviewed educational articles related to ability-based learning approaches, online tools for active learning in pharmacokinetics, and curricular outcome assessment strategies.
Dr. Mehvar has received several awards for both his teaching and research accomplishments, including multiple American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Innovation in Teaching Awards, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center President’s Excellence in Research Award, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center President’s Excellence in Teaching Award, and the Texas Tech University System Chancellor’s Council Distinguished Teaching Award.
ABOUT CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY SCHOOL of PHARMACY (CUSP)
As Orange County’s first school of pharmacy, anticipating entry of its first cohort of students following ACPE and WASC accreditation approval, CUSP will enhance global health delivery and the biopharmaceutical and biomedical sciences by developing leading health care pharmacy practitioners and scientists who have a deep scientific foundation, a passion for human health improvement and the caring concern needed to make a difference in people’s lives. CUSP engages students in science‐based, personalized, interdisciplinary training that engages the local community and focuses students on the lifelong pursuit of answers to, the grand challenges in human health around the world. The program will deliver the Doctor of Pharmacy degree governed by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP), the national professional licensing authority. The CUSP curriculum is an 8-trimester year-round program leading to the PharmD degree. The program will develop pharmacists who are skilled at critical thinking and who are well equipped to work in inter-professional teams in a pharmaceutical scientific research and professional pharmacy practice setting, striving to improve human health through delivery of outstanding patient care. The school will be located in Chapman University’s new Health Sciences Campus in Irvine.
