Chapman University’s School of Pharmacy (CUSP)—the first school of pharmacy in Orange County—is training its students to serve the local communities. CUSP students will assist organizations administering vaccinations, including flu shots, this fall.

The California Board of Pharmacy has recognized Chapman University School of Pharmacy and authorized CUSP student pharmacists to be eligible to apply for Intern Pharmacist Licenses and train for immunization certification when the inaugural pharmacy program begins next month.  The license will allow CUSP Pharm.D. students to begin working in pharmacy environments as paid, part-time interns. Since 2009, all 50 states expanded the role of pharmacists to allow the administration of vaccines.

“This is an important recognition for the school and the seventy students of our inaugural class,” Ron Jordan, R.Ph. FAPhA, founding dean of CUSP. “Chapman’s School of Pharmacy is committed to creating practice-ready graduates who are well-equipped to serve as vital members of team-based patient care. We are grateful for the opportunity to begin this work and increase community awareness of the expert training and knowledge of pharmacists that can improve lives.”

Student pharmacists must participate in more than 300 hours of Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences and more than 1,400 hours of Advance Pharmacy Practice Experience on their way to becoming board certified Pharmacists.

Lawrence “LB” Brown, PharmD, Ph.D., FAPhA, associate dean of student affairs for Chapman University’s new School of Pharmacy

“These experiences will allow student pharmacists to learn more about day to day pharmacy practice,” says Dr. Lawrence “L.B.” Brown, associate dean of student affairs. “Our students can apply what they have learned in the classroom to real patients.”

Established in 2012, Chapman University’s School of Pharmacy is the first such school in Orange County. CUSP has received precandidate accreditation status by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)—a national agency for the accreditation of professional degree pharmacy programs.

CUSP offers two programs: an M.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences program and a three-year accelerated Doctor of Pharmacy program. The ACPE accreditation is specific to the Doctor of Pharmacy program. The M.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences Program is already accredited as a graduate program under the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and does not require ACPE Accreditation. Chapman University has been fully approved by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) to offer the professional doctorate PharmD program, the first step in the accreditation pathway. CUSP applied to ACPE according to the new program standards and process timeline available from ACPE. The school is planning to have a Ph.D. program in the next several years.
