Chapman University School of Pharmacy Already Ranked in Faculty Research Grant Institutional Rankings in its First Year of Operation
Chapman University’s School of Pharmacy (CUSP)—the first school of pharmacy in Orange County—has appeared in four rankings for the 2014 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). The school ranked 52 in all grants, 49 in non-Federal grants, 22 in other Federal grants, and 71 in National Institute of Health grants.
“Our faculty has done a tremendous job in the first year of our operation, considering all the other challenges that come with starting a new school,” said Ronald P. Jordan, R.Ph. FAPhA, founding dean of CUSP. “Our ranking will also assist us with attracting more high quality faculty and students for our Doctor of Pharmacy and other graduate programs.”
The combined total for all CUSP grants that appeared in the rankings is $1,401,398. Moreover, there were a number of additional CUSP grants that were not reported because they came in after the September 30, 2014, cutoff date.
“As a result, we expect our trajectory of funding and ranking increases to be positive in the following years,” said Dr. Keykavous Parang, associate dean of research, graduate programs and global affairs.
The rankings are among 97 pharmacy schools reporting research funding for the year October 1, 2013, to September 30, 2014. There were 139 pharmacy schools operating in that period in total. More information about AACP can be found at:
http://www.aacp.org/Pages/Default.aspx
“I am delighted to see the progress the pharmacy faculty is making already on our research rankings,” said Daniele Struppa, Ph.D., chancellor and president designate at Chapman University. “Our investments are paying dividends that will benefit all of Chapman as this School takes a leadership position amongst its peers.”
Established in 2012, Chapman University’s School of Pharmacy is the first such school in Orange County. CUSP has received precandidate accreditation status by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)—a national agency for the accreditation of professional degree pharmacy programs.
CUSP offers two programs: an M.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences opened in fall of 2014 and a three-year accelerated Doctor of Pharmacy program, which began its first trimester in September of 2015. The ACPE accreditation is specific to the Doctor of Pharmacy program. The M.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences Program is already accredited as a graduate program under the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and does not require ACPE Accreditation. Chapman University has been fully approved by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) to offer the professional doctorate PharmD program, the first step in the accreditation pathway. CUSP applied to ACPE according to the new program standards and process timeline available from ACPE. The school is planning to have a Ph.D. program in the next several years.
ABOUT CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY SCHOOL of PHARMACY (CUSP)
As Orange County’s first school of pharmacy with entry of its first professional degree cohort of students in September of 2015, CUSP empowers graduates and faculty to develop a deep scientific foundation, the drive for lifelong learning, and the compassion to optimize delivery of health care for those with diverse and unmet needs in Orange County and beyond through inter-professional practice models and community outreach. CUSP creates the culture and environment necessary to conduct collaborative basic, translational, clinical education and outcomes research and learning that make a difference in people’s lives. CUSP intends to become a leader in the innovative, inter-professional and personalized education of future pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists and pharmacy educators, while being recognized for excellence in collaborative, impactful research, scholarship and practice models that advance global health. The program will deliver the Doctor of Pharmacy degree governed by the ACPE and lead to a license to practice pharmacy as governed by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP).
