Chapman University announces the newest members of its
Board of Trustees
and Board of Governors. The new members will join a 40-member board and a 27-member board, respectively, and serve three year terms. Trustees and Governors support the institution’s vision and mission, provide insight and guidance on academic and administrative programs, participate in fundraising initiatives, and help develop partnerships that enhance the university’s education programs.

Richard Afable



Richard Afable is president and chief executive officer of St. Joseph Hoag Health, a Southern California integrated delivery system comprised of seven hospitals, an expansive physician network and numerous ambulatory sites throughout Orange County and beyond. Dr. Afable, a board-certified internist and geriatrician, is also executive vice president and regional senior executive for St. Joseph Health in Southern California.

Gavin and Kerry Herbert



Gavin Herbert, Jr. is the chief executive officer and co-owner of Roger’s Gardens in Corona Del Mar, CA. He previously served as president of Plant Research Laboratories where he helped to guide the formation of Regenisis, and where he now serves on the Regenisis Corporation Board of Directors. Herbert is a member of the World President’s Organization and serves on the board of the Crystal Cove Alliance.

James Peterson


James Peterson
is the Chief Executive Officer of Microsemi Corporation, headquartered in Irvine, CA, and also serves as their Chairman of the Board. In addition to serving in various leadership capacities at UC Irvine, Peterson is on the board of M.I.N.D. Research Institute, as well as serves on Chapman’s
Schmid College of Science and Technology
Leadership Cabinet.

New Governors:


Robin Follman-Otta has a deep background in the arts, including performing as one of the leading sopranos in the operatic industry for more than 30 years, as well as in leading positions at the Orange County School of the Arts. Since retiring from the arts, Ms. Follman-Otta has led the team at Markall Inc., along with its manufacturing arm, RA Industries, LLC, as chief executive officer.

Dustin Kemmerer earned his bachelor of science in business administration from Chapman University in 1997, and during his time at Chapman served as captain of the varsity soccer team when he led the Panthers to the Final Four Championship. He is currently president of Park West Landscape Management, a position he has held since 2005.

John Sanders is a Chapman alumnus graduating with a bachelor of arts in economics in 1970. After earning his juris doctor from UCLA, he worked for the California State Department of Justice and eventually opened his own law practice. Sanders is a member of the California State Bar Association, the John Langston Bar Association and the California Association of Black Lawyers.
