Acclaimed top choir of the California-based university has toured the world and performed for popes and presidents

ORANGE, Calif. –
Chapman University’s top choir, the Chapman University Singers, will embark on a concert tour of Texas from January 10-18, 2015. The acclaimed choir, based at Chapman’s respected Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music in Orange, California, has toured throughout the world in its more than 50 years of existence, including command performances for popes and heads of state. The Chapman University Singers will offer performances in venues in and around San Antonio, Austin and Dallas/Fort Worth. Saluting the Protestant denomination that founded Chapman University in 1861, most of the concerts will be at churches of the Christian Church/United Church of Christ.
All the concerts are free and open to the public.

The Chapman University Singers, under the direction of
Dr. Stephen Coker
, boasts a wide choral repertoire ranging from Gregorian chant to modern compositions. The choir’s tour repertoire includes an extensive variety of classical sacred and secular literature as well as international folk music. Featured will be familiar works of Byrd, Mendelssohn, and Rossini and a section of contemporary motets by British composers Paul Mealor and Bob Chilcott and American musician Jake Runestad. The program also includes French works of Thierry Machuel and Henk Badings and a group of compositions from the Baltic countries of Estonia and Latvia. The Singers’ folk music selection includes music of Cuba, South Africa and the British Isles in addition to American spirituals and hymns arranged by Moses Hogan and Coker.

The Chapman University Singers will also offer workshops for choir students in local high schools during the tour. Schools hosting the workshops are Rouse High School, Leander; Flower Mound High School, Flower Mound; Creekview High School, Carrolton; and Duncanville High School, Duncanville.

Mus., who served previously on the choral faculties of Portland State University, the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and Oklahoma City University. In addition to his academic work, Dr. Coker has conducted choirs, workshops and festivals in South Korea, Taiwan, Portugal, Israel and Sweden.
