Chapman University School of Law to host general counsel from Lakers, Ducks and Angels

ORANGE, Calif. – Chapman University will host “Sports Law: Inside and Outside the Lines,” a mini-symposium featuring the general counsel from the Los Angeles Lakers, Anaheim Ducks and Anaheim Angels, on Tuesday, November 15, at 6 p.m.

Panelists will include: Jim Perzik, general counsel to the Los Angeles Lakers, David Cohen, general counsel to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and Katie Rodin, assistant general counsel to the Anaheim Ducks. This special presentation is part of a unique student-led effort to establish a new online journal focused on entertainment, sports and media law at Chapman University’s School of Law.

As the first of its kind in Orange County, the aim of the journal would be to provide information on trends and developing legal issues in an easily accessible online format that would foster the growth of the entertainment, sports and media fields in Orange County.

“As proven by the wave of enthusiasm for the Orange County Bar Association’s new Entertainment, Sports & Marketing Law section, there is a yearning in O.C. for entertainment law activities and information.  An entertainment law periodical by Chapman Law would provide the high-quality information desired by entertainment practitioners and enthusiasts across a wide spectrum of companies and legal service providers, in O.C. and beyond,”  said Michael Baroni, Founder & Chair, OCBA’s Entertainment, Sports & Marketing Law section., General Counsel at Palace Entertainment.

Unique about this event is that this project is the genesis of two law students—Jessica Nguyen and Brandon Mead, who with modest support from the Student Bar Association, have taken their initiative and done the legwork to start up the new journal.

“The focus of the new Entertainment, Sports and Media Journal is to encourage contributions by as many practitioners as possible, with a goal of creating a hybrid trade publication and academic journal to inform industry professionals about trends, news and developments,” says Nguyen.

This symposium will help bring awareness for the new journal and attempt to raise funds to support the journal’s startup through a raffle at the event for signed sports memorabilia donated by the participating sports franchises.

The symposium will be held on Tuesday, November 15, 2011, 6 p.m., at Kennedy Hall, Room 237, Chapman University School of Law. Admission is free.
