 ORANGE, Calif. — On Tuesday, April 5 at 11:30 a.m., Chapman University Dale E. Fowler School of Law’s Chapman Dialogue Series will host a special installment of the annual lecture series featuring the Honorable Justice Salim Joubran, an Israeli Arab judge who sits on the Supreme Court of the State of Israel.  His talk is titled “Freedom of Religion and the Role of the Supreme Court in Israel.”  A Christian Maronite, Justice Joubran is the second  Israeli Arab to serve on Israel’s highest court and the first to be appointed to a permanent post on the court, and is currently the court’s only Arab member.

Justice Joubran earned his law degree from Hebrew University in Jerusalem and entered private practice as an attorney in 1970. He has served as a judge of the Magistrate Court in Haifa from 1982-1993 and was the appointed judge of the District Court in Haifa in 1993.

Justice Joubran currently serves as the chairperson of the Central Elections Committee to the 20th Knesset (Israel’s parliament). He is also a member of the board of the Jewish-Arab Center at the University of Haifa, a member of the board of trustees at the University of Haifa, and has been recognized with an honorary doctorate from the University of Haifa.

The presentation will be moderated by Fowler School of Law Professor and 1939 Society Law Scholar in Holocaust and Human Rights Studies Michael Bazyler, a leading authority on the use of American and European courts to redress genocide and other historical wrongs.
