Chapman University is the recipient of the largest reported gift in institutional history. A $100 million commitment from Dale and Sarah Ann Fowler was announced this morning during President Daniele Struppa’s inaugural State of the University address. The new funding from the Fowlers will be earmarked for a future school of engineering.

“Dale and Ann Fowler have made such a tremendous impact to Chapman University over the years,” said Chapman University President
Daniele Struppa
.  “And this commitment will ensure Chapman’s long-term success by allowing us to continue offering the best educational opportunities for our students. It will help us to take our place among the most established and respected institutions in the country.”

Trustee and alumnus Dale E. Fowler ’58 and his wife Sarah Ann are also the benefactors associated with Chapman’s
Fowler School of Law
through a
$55 million gift
donated in 2013; at the time the second largest reported gift to a law school.

“I’m so proud of my alma mater,” said Fowler. “I really feel like Chapman is part of our family and enjoy being involved in the University’s educational areas from science to law to the arts. We feel as though we are making a positive impact on the future generations of students who will benefit from the University.”

Dale E. Fowler is an Orange County native and Chapman alumnus, graduating in 1958 with a degree in economics. An entrepreneur from the beginning, Fowler began his real estate career while finishing his college studies, and built a successful business in industrial property development. Dale and Sarah Ann have been married for 56 years. They have three children – son Jeffrey and daughter Kathryn are also graduates of Chapman University – and 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and divide their time between residences in Massachusetts and Southern California. Additionally, Fowler granddaughter
Sarah Robblee
, Ph.D., is currently a professor at Chapman, and daughter Lori Smith serves on the Chapman Board of Governors.

“As we enter into the six-month mark of Daniele Struppa’s presidency at Chapman, this commitment from the Fowlers—the largest in the institution’s history— demonstrates the importance of philanthropy and alumni support for Chapman and its longevity,” said Wylie Aitken, Chairman of the
Board of Trustees
of Chapman University. “This, on the heels of the recently announced
$15 million gift
to establish the Smith Institute for Political Economy and Philosophy illustrates that it is a ‘new day’ at Chapman.”

In addition to this commitment and the 2013 law school naming gift, the Fowlers have shown tremendous generosity to Chapman over the years including a $1 million gift to the new
Center for Science and Technology
currently under construction, and a gift that made possible the Fowler Steinway Grand Piano Collection in the
Musco Center for the Arts
. They have also supported Chapman Presidential Scholarships, Chapman Celebrates, the Athletics Campaign, the
Economic Science Institute
, the
Crean College of Health and Behavioral Sciences
.
