Chapman University School of Pharmacy to host Pharmacogenomics Program in April
Chapman University’s School of Pharmacy in partnership with the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) is hosting a Pharmacogenomics Certificate Program on April 27-28, 2017, at its Rinker Health Science Campus Irvine, California.
The program is designed for pharmacists and utilizes a hands-on approach, which includes the use of aggregated genomic data sets attendees will work on to advance their understanding of genetic variations and its impact on personalization of medicinal approaches to health care.
An added benefit to attending is the pharmacists will undergo their own personal genomic testing through a saliva sample submitted in advance to personal DNA provider 23andMe. This will allow the pharmacists in attendance to evaluate their own DNA sequences to understand how genetic make-up can influence the therapeutic and adverse effects of drugs.
“Overall, the program is designed to enhance pharmacists’ skills to decipher genetic data on drug metabolizing enzymes and targets, translate that information, and make appropriate recommendations for the patient,” said Ajay Sharma, Ph.D., assistant professor at Chapman’s School of Pharmacy and co-organizer of the event. “This includes clinical decision making, interpretation of patient results, and counseling and collaboration with prescribers to help optimize patient medication regimens.”
The online and the first day of live program equals 20 credit hours of pharmacogenomics educational content and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a Practice-based Continuing Pharmacy Education activity. The second day of the program is “train the trainer” to allow pharmacists to train others. Attendees will be required to complete pre-recorded home study modules to be completed beforehand so that the live sessions can be used for a more interactive learning.
The two-day conference takes place April 27-28. The fee is $295. For registration and additional information, visit:
