Chapman University has received a major gift of California art, valued at in excess of $7 million, from noted collectors Mark and Janet Hilbert of Newport Coast, in addition to $3 million from the couple toward establishing a museum on campus in which to permanently display the collection to the public. Chapman will celebrate the gift at a dedication event at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 13, 2014, at the former Villa Park Orchards Packing House, 350 N. Cypress Street in Orange. The event will feature a display of paintings from the collection; a lecture by Jean Stern, director of the Irvine Museum; and remarks by the Hilberts and Chapman President Jim Doti.

Author Juan B. Guerrero Ávila will speak and sign books at Librería Martínez de Chapman University this Saturday, February 8 at 4 p.m. He’ll be talking about his novel Mi Amigo el Flamboyan (My Friend the Flamboyan Tree). Set during the tyranny of Trujillo in the Dominican Republic, it’s the touching story of a family where the father’s absence is overcome by the mother’s wishes of progress for her children.

Jim Taulli, has been tapped to direct the Chapman University Department of Theatre’s next production, “Spring Awakening,” which will run October 24-26 and November 7-9 in Chapman’s Waltmar Theatre. The winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, “Spring Awakening” is a rock musical adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s 1891 German expressionist dramatic masterpiece about teenage self-discovery. Wedekind’s frank and, for its time, shocking play, subtitled “A Children’s Tragedy,” was banned in Germany for some time because it included themes of sex, homosexuality, child abuse and rape.
