Eco-Friendly and Affordable New Year’s Resolutions Trying to be more environmentally conscious on a budget in 2020? Here are some New Year’s resolution ideas on how to do just that!

- Consider committing to Meatless Mondays, vegetarianism, or veganism. Through purchasing whole foods such as fruits, veggies, grains, seeds, and legumes, you might be surprised with how much money you can save by cutting out animal products or processed foods while staying healthy at the same time! Stay tuned for our plant-based guide for Chapman and Orange food businesses.
- Make a pledge to volunteer at organizations that advocate for the environment, or you can support areas affected by natural disasters through donations. Spend the money you might on a cup of coffee to donate to a worthy cause. Right now, to help alleviate Australia’s bush fire and protect wildlife, you can donate to the Australian Red Cross, the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, or even adopt a koala at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital.
- Refuse single-use plastics. If possible, invest in a reusable water bottle or simply reuse a glass jar, carry a set of bamboo or metal utensils or Tupperware. To challenge yourself, pledge not to purchase any food or beverages in plastic, and enjoy a small discount at certain cafes for bringing your own tumbler.
- Bring unwanted clothing or accessories to a thrift shop to receive cash. You can also use the money to thrift shop instead of online shop to prevent transportation emissions and avoid fast fashion.
- Start buying refillable hygiene products or bars of soap instead of plastic-packaged body washes, shampoos, lotions, household detergents, powders, and more. For example, check out a zero waste shop and refill station such as EcoNow in Costa Mesa which also appears as a pop-up throughout Orange County. You can bring a reusable container in order to simply pay for the weight of the product you purchase while staying zero-waste!
