The Adventures of Starkiller (UA’s Ryan Tolentino) at Comic Con
August 4, 2015
Ryan Tolentino, senior graphic designer, has been to three San Diego Comic Cons in the last 10 years, including the most recent one in July. This year, he dressed as Galen “Starkiller” Marek from the 2010 game,
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2
.

“I love that character and I’m a big fan of the actor behind it, Sam Witwer,” Ryan said. “It’s such a secular character, but typically I get at least one person saying, ‘Starkiller, I love that costume!’ or ‘That version is my favorite.’ In the game, Starkiller goes through numerous wardrobe changes and the fashion hearkens back to the Star Wars we all came to love. His wardrobe does a great job paying homage to the fashion of Han Solo, Boba Fett, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Tusken Raiders, Darth Maul, Rebel Pilots and Soldiers, and many more beloved Star Wars icons.
While dressed as Starkiller, Ryan met Sam Witwer at this year’s Comic Con. He was able to show his costume off to Witwer and even take a picture with him.
It’s no surprise that the cosplay, or costume play, is Ryan’s favorite aspect of Comic Con.
“I love seeing people portray characters that have moved them,” Ryan said. “I also go to see the spectacle of Comic Con: celebrities, T.V./movie/video game debuts, cosplay/costuming, the extravagant tradeshow booths, the innovations in technology (such as 3-D printing), and the beautiful masterpieces in Artist Alley. I also go hunting for good Kung Fu movies before they become popular in the U.S.”
Mary Platt, APR, was also at the San Diego Comic Con this year. In addition to her involvement with comic fanfare, Mary is also a sought-after Sherlock Holmes expert.

“In the end I didn’t walk away with any swag,” Ryan said, “but I did walk away with a fulfilling experience: meeting people, sharing my cosplay and seeing a world full of inspiration.”
