Dear Chapman Community,

Turnitin is an originality-checking and plagiarism-prevention tool that can check your students’ writing for inappropriate copying. When students submit a paper that utilizes this tool it compares the text to the database of student work, websites, articles, etc.

As of right now, Turnitin does not detect if a student is using ChatGPT. Turnitin has been working on detecting AI writing tools for a while and you can see their progress in this blog.

Turnitin is currently integrated with Canvas and can be easily used when creating assignments for your class. To learn how to use Turnitin, please see the video below from our Turnitin Workshop.

You can also view our Canvas Knowledge Base Den for documentation on How to create a Turnitin assignment in Canvas and How to grade a Turnitin assignment in Canvas.

For more information on how to use the Turnitin Tool in Canvas, please feel free to reach out to us at canvas@chapman.edu. We are also happy to help during our Virtual Tech Hub hours which are Monday – Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
