Tips for Success
Create a practice quiz
Our #1 tip for success is to create a practice quiz with a question or two that allows your students to practice using Respondus LockDown Browser with a Canvas quiz before using it in a high-stakes testing environment. You can find instructions for adding Respondus LockDown Browser to a Canvas quiz on our updated resource page for instructors.
When you create the practice quiz in your Canvas course, we recommend selecting the setting to Allow Multiple Attempts. This will allow students to take the practice quiz as many times as they need to (for example, if they get a new device).
There are multiple reasons why a student might get errors the first time they try to use Respondus LockDown Browser. Giving students time to resolve these errors before a high-stakes test is essential.
Share instructions with your students ahead of the exam
On our updated resource page for students, your students can learn how to download Respondus LockDown Browser for Chapman University, how to take a Canvas quiz using Respondus LockDown Browser, and how to avoid/troubleshoot common issues.
Check for errors after copying quizzes
After doing a course copy, you will need to click on LockDown Browser in your Canvas course navigation menu to open the LockDown Browser Dashboard. Students will get an error preventing them from taking quizzes with Respondus LockDown Browser until you do this. You will see a message confirming that the settings have been updated.
We also recommend clicking on LockDown Browser in your Canvas course navigation menu after copying individual quizzes into your Canvas course and after making any changes to a quiz.
If you see a Fix It button next to a quiz in the LockDown Browser Dashboard, you can click on the Fix It button to clear the error.
Encourage your students to report issues
Thank you for encouraging your students to report any Respondus LockDown Browser issues to the Chapman University IS&T Service Desk. The more awareness we have of the issues our students are experiencing, the better we can support our students and instructors.
