Dear Chapman Community,

Many instructors use Canvas’s Gradebook to calculate final grades, but did you know that the Total column does not automatically treat missing assignments as 0s? This can cause discrepancies between what you see in Canvas and what students have actually earned.

To help, our team developed a built-in Grade Accuracy Report tool:

  • Where to find it: In your Canvas Gradebook, click the Grade Accuracy Report button at the top. 
  • What it does: The tool compares the Total grade (Canvas total) with a Calculated grade (treating missing assignments as 0s). It’s best to use this tool when your students have submitted all of their assignments.
  • How it helps:
    • If there is a mismatch, the report shows only those students with discrepancies.
    • You can download the report to review and adjust grades as needed.
    • If everything matches, you will see a Congratulations message confirming your gradebook is accurate.
