Chapman University’s
Economic Science Institute (ESI)
hosted eight undergraduate and graduate students to participate as IFREE Summer Scholars. This five-week program, generously sponsored by the
International Foundation for Research in Experimental Economics (IFREE)
and the Thomas W. Smith Foundation, allows students firsthand experience to explore and advance their knowledge in economics research, history, and philosophy.

Summer Scholars are chosen not only for their excellence in the
Vernon L Smith High School Workshop in Experimental Economics
or undergraduate course from the ESI faculty, but for their desire to build on what they had learned in these workshops and courses and study more advanced work.

Scholars meet regularly as a group with their mentors, Drs. Andrew Smyth,
Jan Osborn
 and
Bart Wilson
, to explore and discuss texts Adam Smith’s
The Theory of Moral Sentiments
,

Thomas Dixon’s
From Passions to Emotions
, John Steinbeck’s
East of Eden
, R. L. Stevenson’s
The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
,

as well as papers in experimental economics.

Furthermore, scholars worked on compiling and analyzing data sets from research experiments as well as working as a team to design a new experiment.
