Alumni Success stories

Abigail started interning at Experian at the beginning of her senior year at Chapman as an internal communication intern and became a full-time employee shortly after graduating. She shared, “I use a lot of my graphic design skills from Chapman in my current role so what I learned in school was really a formative factor that contributed to my professional path. Although it can be intimidating to join such a global industry, Chapman taught me how to be confident about myself and interact with people. As a student, I was empowered to take charge and was supported by my professors and now I’m in an environment where I can take initiative and develop my skills.

Abigail Francis ’20

Abigail’s career tip

“Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. It is very crucial that you don’t limit yourself to opportunities that are only in your field of interest. Do your research and bring new ideas to the table. Be ready to challenge yourself and explore other options.

Tanya Thomas ’19 studied Communications and majored in English during her time at Chapman. Tanya said networking has played a major role in her professional life and growth. “Connect with people. Align yourself with inspirational leaders and observe their vision and trajectory. When you are able to build strong and personal relationships with people who either mentor you or challenge you to step out of your comfort zone, you’re able to position yourself in an environment that is supportive and this opens up more opportunities for you.”

Tanya Thomas ’19

Tanya’s career tip

“Take ownership of your own development. It is your responsibility to put yourself out there and advocate for yourself. Have your elevator pitch ready. Know how to say who you are in a concise way. Be authentic and the passion you have for the job will shine through.”

Alumni Ben Heymann and Stefani Wendel had some excellent advice for Panthers too! Check it out!

Ben Heymann ’19

Ben’s career tip

“Networking really helped me land a job at Experian. Not only did my professor at Chapman connect me with someone at Experian, I also utilized LinkedIn to filter by Employees at Experian who went to Chapman and connected with them. Having started as an intern at Experian Consumer Services, through building my network, I ended up in a sales role at Experian Health!”

Stefani Wendel ’11

Stefani’s career tip

“Be bold! Find your “headline” and own it. You can be one of a million resumes that look just like yours, find your differentiating factor and use that to your advantage. Don’t discount the things that make you uniquely you beyond the skills you think your potential employer is looking for. It’s as much about you finding a fit that works for you and your life, as it is the company finding a fit for them.”
