Bridging the Readiness Gap: A Roadmap for Empowering Student Success

Hosted by The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning

Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 8:30am-4pm, Orange Campus

“Colleges and universities are witnessing a growing number of undergraduate and graduate students who are ill-equipped for the rigors of college coursework, struggling with mental well-being, and feeling unprepared to join the workforce” (Education Advisory Board, 2024).

Academic and socioemotional readiness are critical determinants of student success in college and the workforce. How can faculty and institutions adapt to the ever-evolving educational landscape? Join us for a series of engaging discussions focused on addressing the gap between faculty expectations and student readiness for college. This event aims to provide faculty with innovative and practical strategies to bridge the readiness gap, ensuring all students thrive in their academic journey and beyond.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Kevin Gannon

“Teaching is a radical act of hope. It is an assertion of faith in a better future in an increasingly uncertain and fraught present. It is a commitment to that future even if we can’t clearly discern its shape. It is a continuing pedagogical practice rather than a set of characteristics. Simply put, we teach because we believe it matters” (Gannon, 2020).

Kevin Gannon is Director of the Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence and Professor of History at Queens University of Charlotte, in North Carolina. He is the author of Radical Hope: A Teaching Manifesto (2020), and his writing has also appeared in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Vox, CNN, and The Washington Post. He is currently working on a project centered around re-imagining intro/survey/gateway courses in higher education.
