Kris Chatterson
October 25, 2011
Artist Kris Chatterson uses technology and unconventional tools to create his large, abstract paintings. Chatterson, a native of Orlando, Florida, currently lives and works in New York City.
With a lifestyle closely tied to the ocean– Chatterson grew up in Florida and lived in Los Angeles for grad school– the ocean and surf culture play a role in Chatterson’s fluid work. Kris Chatterson attained his Bachelor of Fine Arts at The Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida in 2002. In 2004 the artist received his Master of Fine Arts from Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California. Chatterson remained in Southern California where he participated in numerous Los Angeles-based shows before moving to New York City.
While speaking about his body of work Chatterson stated, “ I paint to explore abstract possibilities within self-prescribed limitations.” Today, the artist has moved to digitally composing his work by piecing together past paintings into a single canvas.
The Escalette Collection of Art at Chapman University currently is displaying four of the artist’s paintings, two of these works were gifts from the artist himself. These bright, multi-layered, gestural paintings are examples of Chatterson’s early painting style.
