Stanford University releases a report annually featuring the most cited scientists globally using SCOPUS, a comprehensive abstract and citation database. The data set was last updated in August 2024 and includes both career-long and single-year impact data. The scientists recognized in the report are determined by two significant factors: the number of publications and the number of citations.  The Fowler School of Engineering is proud to have two professors named in this report.

Congratulations to Nasim Mohammadi Estakhri, Ph.D.,and L. Andrew Lyon, Ph.D., on being named the top 2% of scientists globally! This is Dr. Estakhri’s fourth year receiving this recognition and Dr. Andrew Lyon’s fifth year.

Nasim Mohammadi Estakrhi, Ph.D.

Dr. Nasim Estakhri is one of the top 2% of scientists in the field of Networking, Telecommunication, and Optics for 2023. Dr. Estakhri’s research focuses on the areas of nano-photonics, metamaterials, nano-optics, and applied electromagnetics, working at the intersection of engineering, physics, and materials science.

“My research group works in the broad area of metamaterials and metasurfaces, aiming at understanding and controlling different aspects of wave interaction with engineering nanostructures,” shared Dr. Nasim Estakhri.

During her time at the Fowler School of Engineering, Dr. Estakhri has inspired students with her passion for research, engaging undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers in metasurfaces and metastructures.

Dr. Nasim Estakhri’s graduate research student, Ponthea Zahraii ’24, currently research focuses on implementing inverse tandem neural networks for nanophotonics structures and optical trapping.

Working alongside Dr. Estakhri has been nothing but wonderful. She is dedicated, understanding, and always thinking about how we can further our research. I was super intrigued by the topic of research and decided that working with her would allow me to develop my machine learning skills while also learning about topics I had never been exposed to”, said Zahraii.

Andrew Lyon, Ph.D.

Dr. Andrew Lyon is one of the top 2% of scientists in the field of Chemical Physics and Polymers. Throughout his career, Dr. Lyon has 166 publications and has been cited 12,526 times. Dr. Lyon ranks number 1,723 of the top scientists in the world in his field.

Dr. Lyon’s research focuses on the development of new materials for regenerative medicine applications. His work combines chemistry and physics with nanomaterials for applications in bioengineering.

Dr. Lyon is an established research mentor for the Fowler School of Engineering and Schmid College of Science and Technology, offering his guidance and expertise to students.

“He is incredibly inspirational because he translates the work he does in the lab into real-life products that have the capacity to benefit the lives of many people. He bridges the gap between science and commercialization which many scientists fail to do. He has inspired me to pursue a career in research due to this since I have a love for both science and business,” shared  Abby Caine ’25, molecular biology major.
