Welcome to the Class of 2018! New students kick off first year with two-day orientation

New students meet in the Kennedy Hall lobby for the first day of Orientation.
Kennedy Hall was abuzz with anticipation last week as the class of 2018, 151 new JD students in all, gathered for Orientation at Chapman University Dale E. Fowler School of Law. During the two-day program, new students got to know their classmates, attended mock classes and presentations by administrators and faculty on academics and professionalism, and enjoyed an informative and inspiring keynote speech by Angels Baseball General Counsel Alex Winsberg.

Winsberg, who also serves on the Advisory Board for Fowler School of Law’s Business Law Emphasis Program, addressed students on how to make the most of their education at Fowler School of Law, emphasizing the benefits of the law school’s practical skills training. He encouraged incoming students to take advantage of the school’s clinical programs, which provide critical real-world skills and actual client interaction.

During the first day introductory breakfast, incoming students joined “big siblings” from the law school’s upper classes. Assistant Dean of Admission and Diversity Initiatives Karman Hsu welcomed the group who come from a diverse range of backgrounds that include an Army Officer awarded Army Commendation Medal and Combat Medical Badge, a U.S. Air Force Senior Airman, an associate producer for a nationally syndicated radio show, a writer and director, a television field producer, an amateur comedian, a 2016 Olympic team member, a professional basketball player, and a television and commercial actress, among others. Students hail from 75 undergraduate schools and were born in 13 different countries.
At the closing of the Orientation, students were asked to take an oath of professionalism administered by Dean Tom Campbell before their fellow classmates, family and significant others.
