Chapman Dialogue Lecture Delves into Financial Regulation

Florida State University College of Law Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and William & Catherine VanDercreek Professor Manuel A. Utset, Jr. recently presented “Financial Regulation: A Behavioral Law & Economics Perspective” at the latest installment of the Chapman Dialogue Lecture Series.
Dean Utset’s lecture looked at the fragility of financial institutions and markets, and the role this plays in creating financial regulation. “We need to focus on rational types of behavior that lead to financial breakdowns,” Utset said. “If we fail to take into account some of these behavioral factors, we have regulation that is not completely effective.”
The lecture was followed by a conversation with Fowler School of Law’s Betty Hutton Williams Professor of International Economic Law Lan Cao. Professor Cao posited whether it might be better to take regulations piecemeal, “rather than having one umbrella fitting everybody with very different interests and very different degrees of sophistication.”
