The Leatherby Libraries is pleased to introduce a 3-part Introduction to R Programming Summer Workshop Series to introduce students, staff, and faculty to fundamental coding concepts in R. R programming is an effective tool that can propel efficiency and effectiveness in analyzing complex statistical analyses while producing quality data visualizations. These workshops are for beginners or those seeking a refresher on R.

*No prior programming knowledge is required for these workshops. However, it is recommended to attend all three workshops, as each session will build on information covered throughout the series.

Dr. Elaine Yeung, the Leatherby Libraries’ STEM Librarian, will teach this workshop series. Dr. Yeung used R throughout her PhD program to conduct gene expression analyses and visualize large-scale genomic data to study flooding responses in model plants.

Workshop 1 – Intro to R Programming

Join us for an interactive workshop covering the basics of R and RStudio. Participants will get an overview of R syntax, the RStudio interface, data structures in R, importing datasets, and saving work in R. Participants are encouraged to sign up for a free online Posit Cloud account (https://posit.cloud) before the workshop. Please bring a laptop for this workshop.

    • Date and Time: Friday, July 12, from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
    • Location: Building 9401, Room 113 at the Rinker Health Science Campus
    • RSVP here.

Workshop 2 – Intro to Data Wrangling

Learn how to inspect and manipulate datasets to extract data in a format that is helpful for visualization and modeling, including how to use the tidyverse library and apply indices and functions to subset, merge, and export new data tables. Please bring a laptop for this workshop.

    • Date and Time: Friday, July 19, from 12:00 -1:00 p.m.
    • Location: Building 9401, Room 113 at the Rinker Health Science Campus
    • RSVP here.

Workshop 3 – Intro to R Graphs

A hands-on workshop that will introduce data visualization using basic R graphing functions on the RStudio interface. Attending or reviewing the topics covered in the first two workshops is recommended. Please bring a laptop for this workshop.

    • Date and Time: Friday, August 2, from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
    • Location: Building 9401, Room 113 at the Rinker Health Science Campus
    • RSVP here.
