On July 26, 1990, a significant milestone occurred with the passing of The Americans with Disabilities Act, protecting and advancing the rights of people with disabilities. In recognition of the passing of this legislation, July has been designated as Disability Pride Month. This year, on July 9, 2024, California officially acknowledged Disability Pride Month for the first time. In honor of Disability Pride Month, our Health Science Librarians Ivan Portillo and David Carson have curated a virtual exhibit, “Disability Pride Month,” featuring crucial statistics and a wealth of resources related to the prevalence of disabilities in America.

The exhibit features an informative infographic titled “Disability Impacts All of Us,” created by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to break down the impact of disabilities on communities. Topics covered in this visual aid include statistics on access to healthcare and the overall health of people with disabilities. It delves into the percentages of Americans grappling with functional disabilities that affect their daily lives, including impairments to their mobility, cognition, independent living, hearing, vision, and self-care disabilities. The visual aid concludes by encouraging change to promote healthier lifestyles for individuals with disabilities through a greater range of inclusive healthcare, overseeing public health data, and increasing research on reducing health disparities.

This virtual exhibit contains links to e-books and academic journals accessible through the Leatherby Libraries. These resources offer valuable insights into disabilities in society. Additionally, our Health Science Librarians have compiled a list of online resources that provide information about different disabilities, data, statistics, and advocacy groups.

All of the resources in the virtual exhibit can be accessed by all members of the Chapman University community.
