ORANGE, Calif. – Chapman University has become the first university in Orange County to announce a partnership with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The partnership is spearheaded specifically by the MBA Alumni Association of the Argyros School of Business and Economics, and is part of Chapman’s growing interest in the health sciences.

“We were looking for a cause to engage the entire Chapman community: alumni, students, faculty and staff,” said Scott Johnson, MBA ’13. “It quickly became clear that the Komen Race for the Cure cause was the one everyone gravitated toward and wanted to embrace.”

The Chapman team hopes to raise $10,000 and sign up 50 runners for the Komen race taking place September 22, 1013, at Fashion Island in Newport Beach. According to the team website, if each team member who participates in the Race for the Cure raises $125; that will fund more than 17,000 free mammograms for women in Orange County.

In 2012, more than 18,000 participants raised $2.4 million making Orange County’s Race for the Cure the largest event of its kind in Orange County.

Chapman University is dedicating its partnership in this year’s race to two prominent Chapman individuals who have both battled breast cancer: Don Booth, a professor in the Argyros School of Business and Economics for the past 50 years (and who is retiring this year); and Lynn Doti, also a long-time professor in the Argyros School, as well as the wife of Chapman University President James L. Doti.

According to the Susan G. Komen website, the organization has funded more than $750 million in breast cancer research and $1.5 billion in community outreach programs over the past 30 years; providing funding to help low-income and uninsured women get screened and get treatment; advocating for cancer research and working globally in more than.
