Strategic Marketing and Communications has authored a unified university policy for social media. To aide your social media efforts, outreach, and communications, we recently published the 4th draft of the Chapman University Social Media Policy. Based on university staff and faculty feedback, we have updated these guidelines and will be applying the “best practices” to social media accounts wishing to be “officially recognized” on the Chapman University website.

The policy is in place to portray, promote, and protect Chapman University on the Internet, as well as protect personal and professional reputations of faculty, staff, and administrators.

Official university social media accounts

Chapman University will recognize your social media account if your department or college adheres to the guidelines. “Official endorsement” will list your department or college’s social media handle on the university social media webpage. When appropriate, the Chapman University handles (Facebook Page and @ChapmanU Twitter) will also link and promote the account within their own posts and communication activities.

Register your social media site

If you have not done so already, register your social media handle with the SMC – Campus Registry. If you do not remember, email the Interactive Marketing Specialist (me!) We are currently only working with departments, colleges, and professional academic organizations. Student groups will be discussed at a future date.

The Interactive team will view your sites for a period of time, and notify you with your account’s status. You may be contacted with information, suggestions, and comments to enhance your handles before moving forward.

Let the guidelines help

The policy will aide you in your online conversations. It will discuss the importance of consistency – posting suggestions, monitoring your site, and being available to your audience.

Please review the policy and embrace the resources we provide and will continue to provide in the future.

Feel free to contact me for me for questions. I look forward to looking over your social media accounts and moving onward to a social media “center.”
