Career presentations are an awesome way for our career office to go out into the field to provide career resources. We want to spread the word about resumes, cover letters, job searching tips etc. so badly that we can also conduct these presentations for you after work hours! Hopefully the Q and A section below will give you a better grasp of what to expect from these presentations and how to request one.

1) First of all, what is a Career Presentation and why should I request one for my organization?

Like I previously said, these presentations are a great opportunity for our office to provide our resources outside the office in a more interactive manner to a way bigger crowd. You can compare it to our one-on-one meetings but instead now with an entire crowd. Questions are encouraged and we love to give out handouts and other swag! Another advantage to our presentations is that they also have some activities embedded into them to create an interactive learning experience. These presentations are often conducted in chapter meetings for Greek life, classrooms or other organizations on campus. We have several professional development topics to select from so if you or your organization wants a little help with resumes or tips on networking, a presentation may be perfect for you!

2) What kind of presentations can I request?

We have 8 types of presentations that you can select from! You can find the list of them below (including the approximate length of the presentations).

  1. Career and Professional Development resources and services overview, including brief Handshake intro (20-25 minutes)
  2. Handshake, Chapman’s Career Portal (20-25 minutes)
  3. Registering an internship for Academic Credit Process (20-20 minutes
  4. Resume and Cover Letters (45 minutes)  * My personal FAV!!!
  5. LinkedIn (30-45 minutes)
  6. Networking and Job/internships Search (30-45 minutes)
  7. Interviews Skills (45-60 minutes)
  8. Career Fair Prep (30-45 minutes)

You can further specify what exactly you would like the presentation to cover in the “Presentation tailoring and goals section” when requesting a presentation! For example, if you wanted to specify that you wanted networking help but specifically for an upcoming event like Meet the Firms, you can let us know here. You can also specify if a resume presentation is for new members who have never made a resume before or if it is to serve as a refresher course for resumes. It is a great way to get the perfect presentation for your organization.

3) Who will be giving the presentation?

Most of the time it will be one of our Career Managers Lisa or Janelle (they are so cool). It can also be one of our Career Peer Advisors including myself, Avery or our newest advisor, Charlot. Sometimes we may team up for a presentation and other times it may just be one of our members. No matter what, though, we are all super confident that we will be able to provide an amazing presentation to your organization and help them grow in their professional development!

4) Who normally requests presentations

Chapman University faculty, staff, students, departments, and organizations may request Career and Professional Development to present on career-related topics in the classroom, during club meetings, and at events.

4) How do I request a presentation?
