PA Graduate Spotlight: Nelly Lim (’24 Physician Assistant Studies) Discovers a Love for Pediatrics and Community Service
May 29, 2025
What’s one unexpected opportunity or experience you’ve had at Chapman that you never imagined before enrolling?
One experience I never imagined before enrolling at Chapman was joining the student society and becoming the Community Outreach Chair. Taking on that leadership role helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect. I learned how to communicate more effectively and had the privilege of giving back through community service, an experience that has become one of the highlights of my time here.
Can you share a moment when a professor, advisor, or classmate made a big difference in inspiring you during your studies or clinical rotations?
During my elective rotation in pediatric hematology/oncology, I experienced one of the most emotionally challenging moments in medicine: delivering bad news to a patient and their family. What stood out was the way the physician handled the situation with such compassion and patience, allowing the family time to process while clearly explaining the options ahead. The most powerful moment, though, was when the young patient – despite not fully grasping the gravity of the news – comforted a grieving family member. That act of bravery and kindness deeply inspired me and reminded me why I chose this profession.
If you could describe your experience at Chapman in one word, what would it be—and why?
Unforgettable. I’ve grown so much, both professionally and personally, through my time at Chapman. I’ve built lifelong friendships, learned from incredible faculty, and gained experiences that I’ll carry with me throughout my career.
