Seven Things You Can Do With The Oakie Awards Prize Money

Calling all comedy lovers! There are four $2,500 awards up to grabs, thanks to the Jack Oakie and Victoria Horne Oakie Charitable Foundation. We want you to apply before it is too late! What can you use that money for? We have ideas for you….
1. A Zombie Apocalypse
Does your script center on a zombie takeover or a creepy ghost murder? The money could go toward that make-up crew who can make it look better than that guy who tried to use Party City make-up for his zombie costume for Halloween.
2. A Comfy Bed
Do you want go to the Sundance Film Festival but don’t have the money to stay in a hotel? Ditch your plans to stay on an air mattress in a Craigslisted apartment, and stay in a sweet bed and breakfast. Your back will thank us later.
3. A Sassy Exit
*Blowing up cars may not be approved by Risk Management
4. Epic Action Scenes
Do you want to have that epic Star Wars-style fight where opponents seem easily matched and in perfect light saber harmony? Put the award money towards an awesome stunt coordinator!
5. Books+You=Education
You know those things that you carry around with you and reference when there is a test? This award can help you pay for those!
6. “Theater Practical Research”
This is our fancy way of saying movie tickets. We aren’t saying take a date and have that only-in-cheesy-rom-coms awkward popcorn moment. But we will be happy to fund research of your favorite filmmakers!

There are four student awards available in 2015, each at the amount of $2,500:
- The JackOakie Memorial Award for Excellence in Comedy Screenwriting
- The JackOakie Memorial Award for Excellence in Directing a Film Comedy
- The JackOakie “It’s All in Fun” Award for Excellence in Comedic Arts
- The Victoria Horne-Oakie “Myrtle Mae” Award for Acting Excellence in Comedic Theatre or Film
The Jack Oakie and Victoria Horne Oakie Charitable Foundation’s mission is to follow through with the late Jack Oakie’s wish, “Give the money to the kids,” by underwriting awards and lectures on comedy for deserving film students at some of the most prestigious institutions in the country. Mrs. Oakie instructed the trustees of the Foundation to keep her husband’s legacy alive by reinforcing the value of visual and performing arts education.
