Penny Kim and Maria Toner have been chosen as winners of AFCEA Educational Foundation STEM Teaching Scholarship awards for 2010.

Roxanne Miller, Coordinator Secondary Teacher Education Program, is pleased to announce Chapman University students Penny Kim, Secondary Mathematics Teaching Credential Program and Maria Toner, Master of Arts in Teaching: Secondary Science (Chemistry) Emphasis Program have been chosen as winners of AFCEA Educational Foundation STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) Teaching Scholarship awards for 2010.

The AFCEA (Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association) Educational Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to support development of engineers and technical personnel through selective motivational awards, prizes and scholarships, grants for educational activities of unique and high value, and professional educational programs.

The AFCEA Educational Foundation’s STEM Teacher Scholarship Awards is an annual competition that provides $5,000 scholarships to each of approximately 35 U.S. students actively pursuing an undergraduate degree, graduate degree or credential/licensure for the purpose of teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) subjects at a U.S. middle or secondary school.
In addition to the STEM Teacher Scholarship, each graduating recipient, upon assuming a STEM teaching position in a U.S. middle or secondary school, is eligible to receive a $1,000 AFCEA Science Teaching Tools grant per year for 3 years, on the condition he/she remains teaching a STEM subject.  Click here for more information on this program.

Chapman University is the only California institution of higher education to have two of its students chosen for this distinction.  We are very pleased to have the qualifications of Ms. Kim and Ms. Toner, both of whom will be completing their student teaching in local public schools this fall, be recognized at a national level by the AFCEA.
