Race to Nowhere, produced and directed by Vicki Abeles

Chapman University’s College of Educational Studies is pleased to host an evening with a screening of Race to Nowhere, produced and directed by Vicki Abeles. A mother of three and former Wall Street attorney, Abeles awakened to this crisis while in a hospital emergency room as her 12-year old daughter was being treated for stress-related illness. She saw firsthand how the pressures were overwhelming not only to her own kids, but to students everywhere – in every kind of school environment and community.

The screening will take place on Monday, November 29 at 7:30pm in the Irvine Lecture Hall with a reception at 7:00pm. A special Q & A with Producer and Director Vicki Abeles will take place directly following the screening. The event is sponsored by the Paulo Freire Democratic Project and the College of Educational Studies.

In a period when the discussion about the future of education is at the forefront in today’s society, Race to Nowhere presents an opportunity for parents, teachers, and policymakers to become aware of the silent epidemic within our education system. The documentary tells the stories of young people pushed to the brink, burned-out educators, and deeply frustrated parents. The documentary has been shown in some 300 libraries, churches, theaters, schools across the United States, and in and around the world including China, Singapore, and Canada.
