Kappa Delta Pi logoAnne J. Steketee (Ph.D. ’20) has been chosen as the winner of the 2020 Louise M. Berman Fellowship Award, a research fund managed by Kappa Delta Pi (KDP), an international honor society in education. This award will help Dr. Steketee fund the continuation of her doctoral research, “Secondary Traumatic Stress in Teachers and School Communities Impacted by the Opioid Epidemic.” In a press release announcing the award, KDP explained the importance of Steketee’s research and that “her ideals support new modes of inquiry that will further the field of education.”

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, opioid use and overdose have continued. The stress on families, schools, and teachers is unparalleled,” Steketee said. “My work seeks information from the source—teachers—to strengthen pathways of resilience.”

KDP serves as the endowment manager for the legacy of the Louise M. Berman Fellows Fund, which seeks to advance curriculum, drive creative inquiry into the human condition, and collaborate on cross-national education projects. The award is open to all graduate students at the master’s and doctorate levels. The purpose of the award is to enable KDP Fellows to conduct research that will

  • advance the field of education to promote growth and development;
  • promote ethical decision-making in educational settings;
  • foster collaboration on major education initiatives to create an open dialogue among people of all races, ages, genders, and abilities;
  • propose future direction for educational leadership in a range of settings, including KDP; and
  • creatively explore social justice issues and the study of the human condition.

This spring, Dr. Steketee accepted a tenure-track position at Millikin University in Illinois, where she will continue her research starting in June 2021.
