Andrea Barrientos, MA in SPED ’22, an education specialist at Sierra Vista Middle School in Irvine, has been named a Teacher of Promise by the Irvine Unified School District. The honor is given annually to first-or second-year instructors who demonstrate outstanding skills, professional curiosity, and an enthusiasm for teaching. Ms. Barrientos was recognized for establishing co-ownership of IEP documents with students and co-developing a Reading Buddies program that pairs general education students with students in the Extensive Support Needs program to build fluency and literacy skills.

Ms. Barrientos has quickly become a driving force for inclusion and equity at Sierra Vista, developing staff professional development, organizing school-wide events such as Abilities Awareness Day, and bridging the gap between teacher and student groups to foster a student-centered culture of belonging. Colleagues and administrators describe her classroom as a safe space for students, where her dedication to their emotional well-being and intellectual growth has made her an invaluable resource to the special education department.

Ms. Barrientos was among four Teachers of Promise recognized by the Irvine Unified School District this year. Honorees are celebrated in front of their students, family members, and peers, and will be formally honored at the Excellence in Teaching Awards program. Attallah College is proud of Ms. Barrientos for making an impact on education in the local community.
