We addressed the California energy ‘duck’ curve problem with a more intelligent and efficient household thermostat. Our goal was to alleviate the strain on the electrical grid during times of peak energy demand by redirecting demand to a more favorable time during the day. Our strategy was to create a smart thermostat that would utilize renewable energy at times when they are most abundant, shifting the energy demands away from peak periods. This thermostat would be able to adjust to the user’s home and weather conditions, represent an efficient solution to the ‘duck’ curve problem, and contribute to the larger goal of creating a more stable energy demand throughout the day for California.
