Phishing Alert! Scammers Are Hard at Work During Times of Mourning

As many of you are already aware, on April 21, 2016 the world was saddened by the news of music legend Prince’s (Prince Rogers Nelson) sudden death. Millions of fans have been gathering in many locations around the world to remember Prince and his life. Prince was an inspiration to many and will be greatly missed. And though we may be saddened by his death, we must always remember that his music will live on forever.
When it comes to the death of a celebrity, there are always questions as to what happened and why. Due to the high profile nature of Prince’s death, there is an ever higher risk for scammers trying to take advantage of people during this time of grieving and question. This is where we need to be extra careful and vigilant about what we are attempting to view online.
Chapman University’s Information Security Office, George Viegas, is issuing a Phishing Alert due to potential attacks by cyber-attackers as they may use Prince’s death as a way to access your private information. Such attacks may in the form of a video or article link in an email, text message or feed on social media. If you or anyone you know has been receiving suspicious emails, texts, or feeds on social media, please do not open them or forward them on to anyone you know. It is important to remember that we at IS&T are here to help protect you from cyber-attacks. It never hurts to get a second opinion from those who are trained to spot possible phishing attempts.
