Fowler School of Law Alumnus Honored with Freeway Dedication
Announced on April 15, 2016
Dedication signs along the 405 freeway in Irvine were recently installed to honor Chapman University Dale E. Fowler School of Law alumnus James “Mitch” Waller (JD ’99), who was killed three years ago by a distracted driver near the same stretch of highway.
Waller, a police officer and former Westminster police chief, and his partner were struck as they rode bicycles along Highway 133 toward Laguna Beach. Waller’s wife, Sally, has spent the past three years working to have the signs erected to raise awareness about the risks of distracted driving.
Waller was a police officer while attending night courses at Fowler School of Law, and passed the bar exam in 1999 before going on to become captain with the Westminster Police Department.
