Celebrating Women in STEM A Book Display on Women in STEM for Women's History Month

April 4, 2025

The Leatherby Libraries curated a brand-new reference desk display highlighting the achievements and accomplishments of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Women have long been at the forefront of discovery, innovation, and leadership in these fields, driving inventions and research that have shaped our society.

One of our selections is Women of Color in STEM: Navigating the Workforce by Julia Ballenger, Barbara Polnick, and Beverly Irby, which unveils the challenges and achievements of women of color across STEM disciplines, including mathematics, science, and engineering. The authors examine how intersecting identities, including race, class, and gender, have impacted the experiences of the highlighted women in their professional fields.

Another selection, Women in Water Quality: Investigations by Prominent Female Engineers by Deborah Jean O’Bannon, explores the impact of women’s research on the public health and environmental engineering profession. Each chapter highlights the contributions and biography of a woman who has directly contributed to engineering. O’Bannon’s thorough exploration of the history of women’s participation in engineering emphasizes the often-overlooked impact these women have made throughout the field’s evolution.

This book display was curated by the Leatherby Libraries’ Student Administrative Assistants Isabella Piechota ’25, Arianna Tillman ’25, and Annikah Carpio ’26.

During the Academic Year 2024-2025, Leatherby Libraries proudly celebrates 20 years of supporting the academic experience at Chapman University.
