Leatherby Libraries’ Short Edition Short Story Dispenser located on the Leatherby Libraries’ First Floor

Calling all Chapman University student writers! Short Édition’s Annual Inter-University Writing Contest, the 4th Annual Long Story Short Award, is returning this Fall 2025. Chapman student writers can submit their short stories for a chance for their story to be added to one of the 500+ Short Story Machines worldwide, and they may even win a cash prize!

Application Requirements and Timeline

Beginning September 29th, Chapman student writers, both graduate and undergraduate, can start submitting short stories that are 7,500 characters or fewer to the 2025 Long Story Short Award here. This year’s theme will be announced on September 29th when applications open.

Applications are due by 8:59 PST (11:59 EST) on November 2nd, and works will be published on the contest webpage on November 3rd for public voting.

Winners will be announced on December 3rd. The jury’s and public winners will be awarded $550 each, and the jury’s coup de cœur (jury’s favorite) will be awarded $400.

The Leatherby Libraries has two Short Story dispensers, one on the Orange Campus in the Leatherby Libraries’ First Floor Lobby, and one at the Rinker Campus in the Health Sciences Study Commons. Check out our blog to learn about the “Short Stories on the Go!” program open to Undergraduate and Graduate students from both campuses.

This contest is an excellent opportunity for all Panthers to have a platform to showcase their written works and connect with other students around the globe through their writing. We encourage all students to participate and share their creativity with the world!
