During the School of Pharmacy’s White Coat Ceremony, Chapman University honored Dr. Wafa Samara with the Gavin Herbert Award.

The award is presented annually to an individual that has greatly impacted both CUSP and the pharmaceutical industry through leadership, professionalism, and compassion- The foundational pillars of CUSP. As the keynote speaker, Dr. Samara encouraged incoming Doctor of Pharmacy students to navigate their studies and eventual profession with thoughtful leadership, compassionate action, and to always keep the integrity of the patient at the forefront of their practice. As Dr. Samara put it, “Be an advocate for yourself, be an advocate for pharmacy, and be an advocate for your patients.”

Currently serving as the Vice President and Chief Pharmacy Officer at City of Hope since June 2020, Dr. Samara has expanded the role of pharmacists in oncology by strategically promoting the profession on a national scale and turning cancer treatments into accessible care. Previously, Dr. Samara has held executive positions in the National Institutes of Health, Department of Veterans Affairs, and was recognized for her contributions by the United States Congress (Congressional Commendation). Dr. Samara also serves on CUSP’s Dean’s Professional Advisory board.

“As Dr. Wafa Samara rose in the industry, she pulled other people up with her,” said Dean Ostrom during her recognition. “That trait isn’t practiced enough in pharmacy, and it’s a trait that we should all aspire to promote and do ourselves.”

Dr. Samara’s recognition, paired with her wanting to build leaders through mentorship and sponsoring, creates a living legacy of her passion for patient care and pharmacy. Chapman University School of Pharmacy is grateful to recognize Dr. Samara for all of her contributions to the industry and our students.
